Okpe is one of the more than 250 ethnic groups that
constitute the Federal Republic of Nigeria. With an
estimated population of 1.3 million, Okpe forms a significant
proportion of the population of Delta State. The homeland
of the Okpe people is situated in the central senatorial
district of Delta State. The Okpe Kingdom, with its
headquarters in Orerokpe, is an ancient kingdom whose
first Orodje (King) was installed in the 17th century.
"According to historical sources, the Okpe are
reputed to be the best politically organized ethnic
nationality for governance within its immediate geo-political
area, second only to the Benin Kingdom."
The major cities/towns of the Okpe
include Sapele (or Urhiapele, as it was known before
British colonial rule), Elume, Aghalokpe, Oviri, Adagbrasa,
Amuokpe, Aragba, Adeje, Esubi, Mereje, and Opuraja.
OKPE VOICE is a cyberspace institute of Okpe studies.
Its objectives include the facilitation of national
consciousness among the Okpe, as well as the propagation
of Okpe culture, language, history and political development
for the general information of the public. The promotion
and defense of Okpe interest remain the paramount objectives
of OKPE VOICE.
